Poole Harbour | | Hamworthy is a peninsula jutting into Poole Harbour,
Europe's largest natural harbour with over 50 miles of shoreline.
The southern edge of Hamworthy is joined to Poole Quay and town center by a lift bridge.
Here also are the commercial docks of Poole, with regular ferry crossing to Cherbourg,
the Channel Islands and St. Malo. |
| On the eastern side is Holes Bay, which is flanked on
its northern shoreline by Upton Country Park. The Park is the gardens of Upon House, a
Grade II listed house. The soft maritime climate gives rise to a variety of trees and
shrubs, which make glorious banks of colour in spring and summer. The large yachting
complex of Cobbs Quay is also situated on the Holes Bay shoreline. |
 Upton House |
The western shore of Hamworthy overlooks the protected areas of Arne, a hidden
heath land of outstanding beauty and important nature reserve, with the hills of the Purbecks
providing a back drop behind the Harbour. This part of the Harbour provides an expanse
of water ideal for dingy sailing, wind surfing and water skiing, and is also home to
Poole Yacht Club. Upton overlooks the northern end of this inlet, Lychett Bay. Upton
borders the rolling Dorset countryside, and is only a few miles from the Isle of Purbeck.
The area is well served by public transport, with regular buses to Poole and
Bournemouth. There is also a railway station on the Weymouth / Waterloo line, London
being less than 2 hours ways on the electrified line.
There are supermarkets, a library and several parades of local shops along the main road that joins Upton
and Hamworthy, and there is extensive shopping facilities in
Poole. Hamworthy and Upton also has schooling for First, Middle and Senior aged
children, with schools in Poole still being within easy reach.
